Mercedes CLA45 AMG

It’s the smallest car in Mercedes’s fleet, and also the smallest engine made by AMG: a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-four. But good things come in small packages: the CLA45 produces 355 horsepower, and because of its small stature, it can hit 62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds, and on its way to a 167-mile per hour top speed with the optional AMG driver’s package (it’s 155 otherwise).

Consider the CLK Black Series to be the Hammer’s spiritual successor. It follows the same formula — a big honkin’ V8 up front, the flared fender arches, the low, wide stance — only now, this being into the 2000s (2008, specifically), the CLK Black Series picks up 500 horsepower and 485 pound-feet — enough to catapult it to 60 in about 4.0 seconds, and on its way to a 186 mile per hour governed top speed (really, at that speed, it’s probably more about preserving the internals than the safety of the driver).

The party piece of the CLK Black Series is that fantastic engine note — growl, really, as “note” doesn’t convey the same sense of tire destruction that the the ungodly noise implies. The CLK Black Series was actually the street-legal, emissions-sanitized version of the CLK Pace Car for Formula 1, and helped set the tone for all the Black Series vehicles that have since followed.

Mercedes-Benz has shelved the nearly 20-year old M-Class moniker. For 2016, the company’s mid-size SUV has been rechristened GLE-Class, which is not to be confused with the GLE Coupe

 set to debut next week at the New York Motor Show, the GLE stands out from the outgoing M thanks to a comprehensively redesigned front fascia that borrows styling cues from the afformentioned BMW X6-fighting GLE Coupe that was presented earlier this year at the Detroit Motor Show. The off-roader gains sharper headlights with integrated daytime running lights, more upright twin-slat radiator grille, revamped lower bumper, and more muscular-looking hood with two power domes.

Inside, the GLE benefits from a larger, more user-friendly screen that runs Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system and a sportier three-spoke steering wheel. New interior colors such as porcelain, espresso brown and ginger beige add an extra touch of elegance to the cockpit.

Going green

The GLE is Mercedes’ first regular-production plug-in hybrid SUV. Positioned near the top of the lineup, the GLE550e 4MATIC is powered by a gasoline-electric drivetrain consisting of a 329-horsepower direct-injected V6 engine and a compact electric motor that makes 114 ponies. Together, the two power sources send 436 horsepower and a massive 479 foot-pounds of torque to all four wheels via a hybrid-specific seven-speed automatic transmission.

built into the gearbox, the motor draws electricity from a 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The pack can be fully charged in about two hours when plugged into a wallbox charger.

A switch located on the center console lets the driver choose one of four driving modes called Hybrid, E-Save, Charge and E-Mode, respectively. Hybrid uses both power sources to deliver the best possible blend of performance and fuel efficiency, E-Save shuts off the electric motor in order to keep the battery’s full charge for a later time and Charge tops up the pack on-the-go. In E-Mode, the GLE can drive on electricity alone for over 18 miles at speeds of up to 81 mph.

Hybrid aside, the M’s engines carry over to the GLE with only minor modifications. The GLE400 4MATIC (formerly called ML400) uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 mill rated at 329 horsepower and 354 foot-pounds of torque, and the GLE350 (née ML350) is powered by a direct-injected V6 tuned to generate 302 ponies and 273 lb-ft. of twist. Both models can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped

The GLE300d replaces the ML250 BlueTEC. Power comes from a 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that pumps out 201 hp at 3,800 rpm and a stout 369 lb-ft. of torque between 1,600 and 1,800 rpm. The oil-burner shifts through a seven-speed automatic that can be paired with an off-road-focused reduction gear and an inter-axle differential lock.

Sports car on stilts

Mercedes’ newly-formed Mercedes-AMG sub-brand has taken the outgoing ML63 and turned the dial up to 11. The familiar 5.5-liter V8 remains but the GLE63 4MATIC now packs 550 horsepower, over 30 ponies more than the ML63, and 516 lb-ft. of torque. Finally, the new-for-2016 GLE63 S 4MATIC rounds out the lineup with an evolution of the V8 whose output has been bumped to 577 horsepower and 561 foot-pounds of torque. These figures allow it to reach 60 mph from a stop in just 4.2 seconds – nearly on par with the 2016 C63 – before topping out at 155 mph.

The AMG siblings feature thoroughly upgraded brakes and a sport-tuned suspension. Additionally, both models come standard with an Active Curve System that uses active anti-roll bars on both axles to keep body roll in check both on and off the track.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class will go on sale across the nation in the coming months. Pricing information will be published closer to its launch.

The E-Class nameplate covers some very different vehicles. The sedan and wagon share most of their interior space and functionality, while coupes and convertibles are closer to each other, in having less of both.

There's more interior room in any E-Class than in models from just a few years ago. The latest editions ride on a wider and longer platform than before, with particularly roomy layouts to be found in the sedan and wagon. They're on par with the BMW 5-Series by the spec sheet, visually a little more spacious, and much more open than, say, the Jaguar XF.

In front, passengers will get deep front foot wells, and a couple of fingers of headroom even with the standard sunroof. The base power-adjustable seats can seem pretty pedestrian in construction--and synthetic material remains the standard base-level upholstery, though in the U.S., the majority of cars are sold with leather. AMG versions have their own grippy, multi-adjustable seats, and on many versions, Mercedes offers adaptive seats that inflate and deflate air bladders in the bolsters as you push limits through corners. If it sounds gimmicky, it is, but it also works well.

As for the rear seat, three adults will truly fit, and leg and elbow room are very good for two passengers in either the E-Class sedan or wagon. The back seat itself is easy to access and flip forward for more space, thanks to a split-folding design.

Small-item storage is decent, with a two-tier glovebox sized just about right for an actual pair of gloves. Cup holders are hidden beneath a slide-forward console lid, and behind and below them is a somewhat shallow storage bin. In terms of cargo space, the latest E-Class sedans got a significant boost in trunk volume; wagons are of course the most versatile for cargo, and they include a couple of temporary-use, rear-facing third-row seats. 

Coupe and Cabriolet models of the E-Class sacrifice some seating space and quite a lot of ease of access. Getting into the back seat can involve some stretching, and there isn't all that much legroom; but you'll find that the seats themselves are quite comfortable.

In all the members of the E-Class family of cars, the plush interior fittings and classy trim set a stylish baseline that can be fluffed up with designer touches. Wood trim, improved cup holders, a quieter cabin, and generally improved fit and finish add to the current generation E-Class's luxurious feel. In the richest designer trims, the E-Class carries off a much more elegant, expensive look than it does in its plainer, standard-issue form. It's also a subdued place to ride, no matter which non-AMG drivetrain you choose: cabin quietness is among the best in this class unless you do go for the most powerful models. Then it's all engine note, all the time, almost always for the better.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Overview

For 2014, Mercedes-Benz debuts a significantly updated E-Class lineup of cars that get brand new styling inside and out.


The E-Class lies in the middle tier of Mercedes’ passenger cars, above the compact C-Class and below the ultra-luxurious full-size S-Class. It is one of the most flexible product lines Mercedes’ makes, coming in four distinct body styles: coupe, sedan, convertible (cabriolet), and even a wagon for some extra utility.  Both the coupe and convertible versions seat four-passengers and have two-doors, while the wagon seats up to seven and the sedan five.



For 2014, exterior styling takes a step back from the curvier design of the outgoing model in favor of a sharper aesthetic. The headlight clusters are now combined, offering only one unit on each side that integrates LED daytime running lamps and both front headlamps which flank an aggressive version of Mercedes’ corporate grille. The prominent fender arches have also been smoothed. Side-by-side, the changes are more obvious when seen on the street but make no mistake: the latest evolution of the E-Class has a more modern, cohesive design than its predecessor.

Mercedes splits the E-Class into variants based on engine size. The smallest engine is its most efficient and found in the E250, which comes as a sedan only. It’s a 190-hp, 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel that makes 369 pounds-feet of torque. Next is the E350, which is offered in all four bodystyles and gets a 302-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. The sedan-only E400 hybrid uses the same V-6 but adds a 27-hp electric motor and returns 30 mpg highway. Rounding things out is the E550, which uses a 402-hp, turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 and comes as a sedan, coupe, or convertible. Mercedes also offers two varieties of the high-performance E63 AMG which comes as a sedan or wagon, with a 550-hp, twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 that makes 531 pounds-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional on all models except the wagon which comes with all-wheel drive standard. A seven-speed automatic is the only transmission option.

Inside, changes abound across the entirety of the E-Class models with a new 3-pod instrument panel and a new dashboard, offered with two different types of wood trim standard. Whereas the C-Class cabin is sportier, the E-Class puts more of an onus on comfort and luxury. A 7-inch display in the center console houses many of the audio and climate functions, and is controlled by a small rotary knob found between the front seats. Mercedes divides many of the E-Class’s optional features into packages that add different sets of electronics and comforts. Available features include a Harmon Kardon audio system, heated and ventilated seats, Mercedes Comand multimedia system, navigation, and a power rear sunshade. 

True to form in a Mercedes-Benz, the 2014 E-Class also offers the latest in safety technology. Nine airbags, collision prevention, driver attention monitoring, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control comes standard. Options include active blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, radar-based adaptive cruise control, and active park assist which will parallel park the E-Class automatically, leaving the driver to only operate the gas and brake.

       Frankfurt 2013: BMW i8 Debuts, Priced For US

  The BMW i8 has made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and has been given a price for when it goes on sale in the US in the spring of 2014. The innovative, all-wheel-drive, plug-in hybrid sports car will have a starting cost of $135,925.

 

The BMW i8 is a 2+2-seater, which uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine in tandem with an electric motor. The gas engine supplies 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, while the electric motor puts 131 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque to the front. This puts combined maximum output at 362 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. This pushes the i8 from 0-62 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds, and it has a top speed limited electronically to 155 miles per hour. Still the combined fuel economy is 94 miles per gallon.

 

 

Using a standard 110-volt outlet, the i8 can recharge its battery to a full charge in just 3.5 hours. Using a BMW I Charging station shortens that to 1.5 hours.

 

The i8 features a Driver Experience Control switch and eDrive, which allows the driver to choose between five driving modes, depending on the situation. In all-electric mode, the i8 has a range of up to 22 miles and a top speed of 75 miles per hour. Comfort mode balances dynamics and efficiency, and is the default choice for everyday driving, offering a range of over 310 miles. Sport mode will reduce that range, as the electric motor will be used to boost power, but it maximizes energy regeneration through deceleration and braking. (Sport mode also optimizes suspension damping and power steering for a performance driving profile). Eco Pro mode aims for maximum efficiency, and can be used in all-electric or hybrid mode.

 

 

Weight savings was a driving factor in the creation of the BMW i8, which manages a very respectable curb weight of 3285 pounds despite the necessary inclusion of a lithium-ion battery pack. The car uses an aluminum frame, and a passenger cell made from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. The battery is mounted in the center of the car beneath the floor, providing a low center of gravity and improved balance. The i8 has a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, which should make handling excellent.

 

 

Just by glancing at the i8, one can see that this car is special, innovative, and full of technology. The scissor doors are a dead giveaway to something unique. The Full-LED headlights are impressive, but more so are the optional laser headlights. The i8 has a Speed Limit Info system, which monitors the route for speed and passing restrictions. This system uses a camera to gather information from the road and checks it against the navigation system. A heads-up display inside the car projects important information onto the windshield, so the driver need not take their eyes off the road to check speed, status alerts, speed limits, etc. BMW’s ConnectedDrive Services offers real-time driving information, online entertainment, and app connectivity.

 

 

We simply cannot wait to see the BMW i8 take to American roads this spring, and with a relatively attainable price of #135925 (including destination charges), we expect to spot a few of them fairly early on.

Following in the tradition of the 6-Series Gran Coupe, BMW has announced the 4-Series Gran Coupe. Much like its larger counterpart, the 4-Series Gran Coupe adds a pair of doors to the coupe model's silhouette and throws in a hatch-style liftgate out back for a dollop of versatility.

 

As with the 4-Series hardtop convertible we recently drove, the Gran Coupe enjoys - as BMW would put it - the more "emotional" design of the 4-Series vehicles in comparison to the more conservative design of the 3-Series. Wider, lower and longer dimensions that than of the 3-Series sedan gives the 4-Series Gran Coupe a more athletic presentation, and the added flexibility of a more usable trunk should prove attractive to potential cross-shoppers.

 Engine options are the same as the rest of the standard 3 and 4 series line: a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, and the venerable 3.0-liter twinscroll-turbocharged six cylinder, good for 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 run of 4.9 seconds. BMW has not made any official announcements about an M4 Gran Coupe, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the Gran Coupe get the M treatment, which would include the biturbocharged, 425 horsepower six cylinder found in the M4 Coupe.

 

The interior is largely a carryover affair from the rest of the 4-Series vehicles, with Luxury, Sport and M Sport trim lines on offer.

The New BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

 

A new 4-door coupe in the mid-sized performance-luxury segment

 

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe adds a fresh dimension to one of the company's newest model ranges. It combines the sleek look and sporty character of the 4 Series Coupe with the functionality provided by four-doors and a spacious, flexible luggage compartment. The 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe arrives in the US in early summer of 2014 with two engine choices. The 428i Gran Coupe will feature BMW's award-winning 240hp TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder while the 435i Gran Coupe will be powered by the much-lauded 300hp TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline six. The 428i xDrive Gran Coupe will also be available at launch with BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive system. All versions will be offered in the US with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014 and makes its US debut at the New York International Auto Show in April 2014.

 

Prices in the US will start at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $41,225 (including $925 destination & handling) for the 428i Gran Coupe. The 428i xDrive Gran Coupe will have an MSRP of $43,225, including destination & handling while the top-of-the-line 435i Gran Coupe will have an MSRP of $46,725, again, including destination & handling.



While this model shares the same length, width, wheelbase and track with the extremely dynamic two-door version, the roofline of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches (112 mm) longer and slopes gently to the rear of the vehicle. What's more, the silhouette is half an inch (12 mm) higher to offer more headroom and comfort for rear-seat passengers. This contributes to increased headroom at all seats and the overall feeling of interior spaciousness. At the same time, the short front and rear overhangs, the long wheelbase relative to the vehicle length, and the set-back passenger compartment are typical BMW touches that add to the perfect balance of the body design and the sleek appearance of this car, which is derived conceptually from the elegant BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.

 

Elegant Coupe with the convenience of a Sedan

Like the two-door version, the sporty dimensions of the 4 Series Gran Coupe are a reflection of its dynamic handling characteristics. The stretched roofline, four frameless doors and a wide, electrically operated tailgate provide the functionality of a sedan within the silhouette of a coupe. The volume of the trunk is 17 cu-ft (480 liters), based on EU measurements. The back of the rear seat can be folded down in a 40:20:40 configuration as desired to increase the load capacity to 45.9 cu-ft (1,300 liters). The flat floor and a two-part loading strip made of stainless steel are practical convenience elements, combined with premium materials. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe can easily transport a baby stroller, two golf bags or weekend luggage for four without using the folding function.

 

In contrast to a two-door coupe, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offers passengers easier access when entering or leaving the vehicle thanks to the four-door configuration. The doors are frameless, having the characteristic design features of BMW midsize coupes. The wide-access tailgate blends perfectly with the overall silhouette. When closed, the precise flow of the lid seams simulates the look of a typical coupe trunk. The standard electric drives that help move the tailgate are installed vertically and require very little space. Thus the area of the rear window is much larger and provides a very good visibility, without limiting available space.

 

At first glance, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is an expression of dynamics and refined elegance. With a length of 182.6" (4,638 mm), a width of 71.9" (1,825mm) and a wheelbase of 110.6" (2,810mm), the four-door variant has the same dimensions as the two-door coupe. The track dimensions of both versions – 60.8" (1,545mm) front and 62.8" (1,594mm) rear – are identical and highlight the dynamic potential of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. The silhouette of the four-door model is 0.5" (12mm) higher than the two-door. The stretched roofline flows gently across both rear doors and blends into the slightly raised and short rear section of the car.

 

Athletic, elegant and powerful from any perspective.

 

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is instantly recognizable from classic BMW design features such as the iconic kidney grille and dual round headlight clusters. The body contours are executed with precision, with multifaceted surfaces that distinguish the eye-catching look up front. Full LED dual headlights can be ordered as an option to bolster the dynamic aura of the vehicle. The three-part, wide air intakes in the front apron emphasize this effect. The extreme left and right apron corners reveal vertical air channels for the Air Curtains. They generate a veil of air around the front wheels, enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe.

 

The profile is distinguished by a bold swage line and a subtle light-catching edge that create the impression of forward movement in the design of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Stretched lines and expressively contoured surfaces generate a dynamic interplay of light and shadows. The gentle slope of the roofline stretches the appearance of the sides even more and visually strengthens the presence of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. The taut and smooth appearance of the side windows, with a B-pillar finished in high-gloss black that is nearly invisible, creating a homogeneous profile. The rear edge of the side glass provides a modern interpretation of the Hofmeister kink that is characteristic of BMW vehicles. This extended window surface allows more light into the interior and improves the overall visibility in the rear passenger compartment.

 

The rear of the car features clear horizontal lines that accentuate its athletic elegance. The taillights are positioned at the outer edges to receive the swage lines, thus serving as transitional design elements that join the body side panels with the rear section. At the same time, they highlight the wide track and powerfully flared wheel arches. When viewed from the rear, the roof of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is somewhat wider than that of the two- door version, emphasizing its unique character.

The interior of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe presents a stylish fusion of sporty allure and luxury. An approach known as layering – the intelligent utilization of space through the structuring of lines and surfaces into layers – expresses the hallmark BMW driver orientation without compromising the passenger experience. The stylish and functional elegance of the interior is highlighted by prominent round instruments with a black panel look and the free- standing flat-screen iDrive monitor. The cockpit and rear passenger compartment are visually joined by trim strips originating in the instrument panel and extending along the upper sections of the door panels into the rear, and embellished by dual-color window sills. The B-pillar blends into the side panel design and includes flowing graphic effects across the entire surface. The side supports and slender head restraints in the rear seat are contoured for a modern, seemingly molded one-piece look that adds to the sporty character of the 4+1 seater.

 

The backrest can be folded in 40:20:40 configurations to create more luggage and storage space as required – with a flat floor for easy loading and unloading. When the seat is completely folded down, the maximum volume capacity is 45.9 cu-ft (1,300 liters), based on EU measure. If only the center segment is folded, four people can ride comfortably while transporting long and bulky items like snowboards, skis, etc. When not folded down, this middle section provides space for two cup holders. The Smart Opener function of Comfort Access is included as part of the Premium Package on US models, which automatically opens the tailgate via gesture control – namely a foot movement underneath the rear bumper when arms are full carrying groceries, packages, etc.

 

Exclusive: Choice of two Lines or M Sport.

 

The premium ambience of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe results from exclusive colors, high-quality and rich material combinations along with special equipment packages for a customized look. In addition to the standard equipment, which highlights the classic character of the vehicle, two design Lines (Sport and Luxury) as well as M Sport are available. These optional packages endow each 4 Series Gran Coupe with a particular character and identity by embellishing the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Sport and Luxury lines offer various renditions of the following elements in contrast to the basic standard equipment: appearance and color of the kidney grille and air intakes, Air Breathers and mirror covers, side window design, front and rear apron trim, door sill finishers, and an interior center stack finished in high-gloss black.

 

To make the strongest dynamic statement, the M Sport package is also available at model launch with special body elements, exterior colors, light-alloy wheels and interior elements.

 

Sport Line: In this optional equipment line, special body elements are highlighted in black. The subtle B pillar and the nine slats in the chrome-colored kidney grille have a high-gloss black finish, whereas the side window elements are finished in matt black. The air intakes in the front spoiler and the Air Breathers in high-gloss black draw attention to the aerodynamic elements of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. The sporty look is enhanced even more with 18-inch or 19-inch light-alloy wheels with a dynamic double-spoke design. The rear is also distinguished by dark elements. A black trim strip and a tailpipe embellisher finished in black chrome stand for sporty dynamics. The interior, by contrast, expresses sporty flair with red accents. For example, the inner rings of the dash instruments and contrast stitching on the steering wheel are red. The 3.0-liter power plant delivers 300 hp between 5,800 rpm and 6,000 rpm, thus contributing to the sovereign dynamics of the new Gran Coupe. Peak torque of 300 lb-ft is generated as low down as 1,300 rpm and remains on tap up to 5,000 rpm. The new BMW 435i Gran Coupé sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. While official US EPA numbers are not yet available for the 435i Gran Coupe, they are expected to be in line with the 435i Coupe, which is rated at 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined.
